Gully Morphological Characteristics and Topographic Threshold Determined by UAV in a Small Watershed on the Loess Plateau

Gully erosion is an important sediment source in small watershed, and causes severe land degradation, particularly semi-arid regions. Accurately measuring gully morphological characteristics, determining its topographic threshold, are vital for simulation control. In this study, 910 gullies were visually interpreted by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology combined with field measurement. Ten characteristics extracted from the digital orthophoto map (DOM) elevation model (DEM) generated UAV images, including length (L), circumference (C), plane area (PA), surface (SA), volume (V), depth (D), top width (TW), mean (MW), cross-sectional (CSA), ratio of to (TW/D). The 30 reachable measured a real time kinematic (RTK) validate parameters images. thresholds determined based on local slope gradient (S) upland drainage (A), using dataset 365 heads their corresponding land-use types. results show that absolute percentage errors (MAPE) 2D 3D less than 10% 20%, respectively, demonstrating high accuracy characteristic extraction V significantly related other nine parameters.
